If you have time to gain experience

  • For individuals who still have time until they want to apply for DClinPsy, ensure you choose supportive degrees that will help you.

Examples may be masters schemes in clinical psychology that include placements. If you can get onto a course that has a placement year this is most ideal.

Ensure that your degrees are all British Psychological Society (BPS) accredited as this will be essential if you wish to pursue it.

  • You need to prove you are good at interpersonally working with individuals struggling with mental health difficulties. Voluntary or work experience is the way to go.

The best role you could get is an Assistant Psychologist position. People who worked in this role are known to have higher acceptance rates than other applicants, although securing an assistant psychologist position is in itself very challenging. Starting with voluntary experience or support working roles tends to be a great start.

Once you have had some support work, gaining a Psychological Wellbeing Practitioner (PWP) trainee position is a great step in the right direction. Then you can either apply or try to get an Assistant Psychologist position.

We can help you gain experience if you lack it, or sell the experience you currently have through your application.

  • A lot of people neglect that approximately 50% of clinical doctorates involve research experience.

Having publications to your name or having research assistance positions in top institutions are the two best ways to prove that you will be able to handle the work.

If you’re ready to apply now

  • In the personal details section of the application, you will need to list your previous work experience. In your personal statement section, you can expand on what is here.

In your personal details, you can write your main job roles. It is here where you want to list, either in bullet point form or in full paragraphs, how you provided value in your role which are directly transferable to clinical psychology.

What is the most relevant thing you did in your job? If you served different disorders (such as both dementia and bipolar disorder), ensure that this is seperated to show clearly all the value you will bring.

We can help you to strategically position yourself in this section.

  • The people reviewing your application need to see that you are determined to make an impact and have a clear vision. The last thing they want is to give people funding who are don’t have the heart or vision to see it through. A clinical doctorate is not easy and they need to know you’ll see it out.

  • The final question on the application is regarding additional information that would make you a good candidate.

This question is very broad and not everyone fills it in, but if you have struggled with your own mental health and have an inspiring recovery journey, this would be an ideal place to put that. People love transformational journeys and this will show that you are ideal for the position.

We can help you choose the best factors to put here.
